Upcoming Events

It’s been another terrific summer of kickball, and I want to thank you all for your contributions to the league.  Congratulations to the Star Bar Barracudas for winning the Championship, and a Less-Awesome congratulations to the Ghosts!  It seems that top-to-bottom, the league is stronger than ever, which is largely a result of the enthusiasm of our league’s participants.  Pick-up games were going on as soon as the snow melted, and many people played several times a week throughout the season.  Despite the higher level of competition, the comaraderie around the league remains phenomenal, and it’s been a pleasure spending the summer with the people that make Lawrence great.  Being a part of Kaw Valley Kickball is something I treasure, and I hope that each of you feels the same way.

Here’s a few postseason events that are coming up in the next month:

Sunday, Sept. 11, 3-5 pm at the Eldridge:  Town Hall Meeting.  There seems to be numerous great ideas floating around the league, and this is your chance to discuss them.  Each team is asked to send one representative to reflect on the season and talk about ways to make this league better and more sustainable.

Sunday, Sept. 18. at Liberty Hall, time TBA:  End of the Season Party.  Put on your fancy pants and come celebrate a great season!  More info coming soon.

Sunday, Sept. 25, 1-11 pm at Holcom:  KVKL Fall Classic.  This will be the 5th year of this all day tournament.  Come out and play kickball until you collapse…for charity!  We are still deciding on a beneficiary for this, so let us know if you have any suggestions.  More info coming soon.

Thanks again for an amazing season.  I know it’s one I’ll never forget.  Hope to see you all very soon!

All-Star Game and Championships

Hey everyone.  Just a reminder that we’ve got one more Sunday of kickball this week, and it’s all taking place at Hobbs.  We have an All-Star game* scheduled for 5:00, followed by the Less-Awesome Championship between the Ghosts and West Coast at 7:00, and we’ll finish the night with the Awesome Championship game between the Star Bar Barracudas and the Love Garden Squids at 9:00.

*Here are the details for the All-Star Game:

Every team will send a male and female representative.  You can send more, but the players will have to share your team’s one spot in the kicking order, and only one player from a team can play in the field at a time.  This is to make sure that every team’s representatives get plenty of playing time.

The game will be 10 innings, with the odd-numbered innings being all male and the even-numbered innings being all female.  Each gender will have its own kicking order, and each team will have a spot in that order.

The teams will be decided by divisions.  The Langston Hughes and William S Burroughs divisions will be one team, and the captains for that team are Kris Marshall (Star Bar) and Jacki Becker (Sacred Sword).  The John Brown and Carrie A. Nation divisions will be the other team, and the captains for that team are Chris Ford (Love Garden) and Arie Auxter (Replay).  A coin toss will determine the home team.  Here are the divisions 2011KVKLdivisions in case you can’t remember which one your team was in.  Please have your all-stars report to Hobbs by 4:30 to find their captains.

I think we’re in for an amazing time with everyone together at Hobbs, and I hope to see you all there for the grand finale of the 2011 season.

8/21 Ref Assignments, Sportsmanship

Well, we’ve got another full Sunday of kickball ahead of us, and I think it’s going be awesome having everyone at Holcom together.  Once again, there is no equipment pick-up or drop-off this week.  Please make sure you’re starting these games on time, and make sure you report to your field at least 10 minutes early when reffing.

For the 5 and 6:30 games, the teams will ref each other like usual.  The teams playing the 5:00 game will ref the teams playing the 6:30 game on the same field and vice versa.

For the 8:00 and 9:30 games, we have assigned home plate refs for each game, and we will be seeking volunteers on site to fill the other positions.  I have received emails from many of you this week saying you want to ref.  I greatly appreciate your initiative, and please look for me at Holcom so I can find a game for you.  Here are the head referees for the late games:

8:00 Gold:  Nick Lerner
8:00 Blue:  Deron Belt
9:30 Gold:  Erin Adams
9:30 Blue:  Troy Pomeroy

Now for the not-so-fun stuff.  Last week, there were several games that got completely out of control, and some of the behavior was downright despicable.  I tried to find out as much as I could this week, but it was nearly impossible to find the root of all the problems.  At this point, I really don’t care whose fault any of it was, it just needs to stop, and I mean RIGHT NOW.  Believe it or not, the Board and myself have better things to do with our time than investigate a bunch of people in their 20s and 30s (and beyond) acting like bratty children.

To the Captains of our league:  It is your responsibility to keep your teams, and yourselves in line.  You, and only you, may question a referee’s call.  Please do so in a polite and respectful tone, and once you’ve said your piece, move on with the game.  You are not entitled to yell, insult, or in any way disrespect the ref just because you are a captain.  If one of your teammates starts yelling or questioning a ref, you’d better shut them up in a hurry, because there is going to be zero tolerance for this nonsense from here on out.  This also goes for interaction with the other team.  If one of your players is getting into it with someone, go get them, because the refs are not going to put up with teams arguing with each other.  Consider removing your player from the game before the ref decides to eject them.  Thank you in advance for your leadership and good attitudes this week.

To the Referees:  Thank you for volunteering your time to keep our league functioning.  With reffing comes responsibility, though.  It is crucial that you communicate with the captains and the other refs throughout the game.  Find out who the captains of each team are before the game starts, and introduce yourself if you don’t already know them.  It’s amazing how much a couple of handshakes before a game can influence the general mood on the field.  If you are approached or questioned by a player that isn’t a captain, inform their captain of it so that they can remind their player.  If the player is rude or hostile in any way, warn the captain that he or she is out of line.  If the behavior continues, remove that player from the game.

Let’s all follow the example set by Phil in his letter, and admit that things got out of hand.  Let’s all promise ourselves and each other that this week will be different.  Let’s all be mindful of the Spirit of the League when we’re out there, and let’s all enjoy the best part of our season.  Above all else, let’s all have fun playing the game we love.

Thank you,
Geoff

An Open Letter from Phil

Dear Kickballers,

I hope this message finds all of you well.  Recognizing that for half of us the season has reached its end, I want to thank you folks for contributing to another great year of “underground” kickball in Lawrence.  This marks my eighth year in the league and I can honestly say that I still enjoy Sundays just as much as I did many years ago and it is clear that our people are what make our league so awesome.

To those of you still involved our post-season tournament let me wish you the best luck.  With each round played, the games are sure to become more pressure-packed and exciting.  Our yearly playoff consistently creates an atmosphere of tension and attention that few get an opportunity to experience.

Unfortunately, the excitement of the tourney—along with the double-header format—has proven to be more than some of us can handle in a competitive realm.  The opening week of the tournament was marred this year with a number of unfortunate instances where the competitive spirit of some got out of control.  When these events happen (as they have on occasion throughout our history) they are a black eye on the “spirit of the league” that we hold so dear.

Upon hearing of these incidents throughout this week I began to feel increasingly uncomfortable with my own recent behavior.  I have always been a fiery competitor in life, and have always worked (pretty successfully) to keep these emotions in check when playing in tightly contested kickball games.  Sadly, on our league’s biggest stage, fueled by a raucous crowd, a few PBRs, and Cougar’s antics, I let my emotions get the best of me.  I consider my shouting at Cougar to be extremely poor sportsmanship and an embarrassment to the league, my team, and myself.

I hope that my example had nothing to do with the outbursts witnessed at Holcom this past weekend, but I realize this might not be the case.  Being a long-time player, a team captain, and a Board member, I have not provided the example of sportsmanship that I would hope to for and for this I sincerely apologize to anyone who loves this league.

The Board is currently working on addressing these unfortunate incidents and developing new guidelines regarding poor sportsmanship, but regardless of our efforts the ultimate responsibility to improve our league lies on each and every one of us.    While my future role within the league is uncertain, I promise to play out the remainder of the season in a manner befitting our league and its awesome participants.  I invite all of you to join me in setting such an example, to remind each other that this game is fun and that our league is hands-down the greatest recreational sports league in the Midwest.  As players or fans, let’s hold sportsmanship, community, and good times above all else.  Most fun wins.  See you at Holcom.

Sincerely,
Phil Mitchell
Love Garden

We’re all at Holcom this week!

We have updated the bracket to reflect changes to this Sunday’s schedule.  The times remain the same, but we are now able to have ALL of our games at Holcom this week.  This seemed more enjoyable for everyone so that spectators can float between the games, and no teams have to move to another location.  Should be a great time!

I will send more info regarding referee assignments later in the week, and will also be addressing a few issues that have come up.  I wanted to notify you of the location change ASAP, though, so that your teams can plan accordingly.

Thanks,

Geoff

Ref Assignments, etc.

Sorry for the delay with this.  Due to only having three fields with lights at Holcolm, and being down a team, this was a little trickier than exected.  Please note that there have been a couple minor changes with times and locations for the Holcolm games.

At YSC, ref assignments are pretty simple:  The teams playing in the 5:00 game ref the 6:30 game at the same field, and vice versa.  The teams playing the 8:00 game ref the 9:30 game at the same field, and vice versa.  Please contact me if you are unclear on where you should be.

For the Holcolm games, the teams playing at 8:00 ref the 9:30 games and vice versa.  For the 5:00 and 6:30 games, this is a little more complicated.  I have attached a word document  here Holcolm Ref Assignments showing who is reffing the games.  Nick Lerner will be the coordinator at Holcolm, so if you are confused about where to go, please find him.  Also, if you don’t have a game to play or ref, I’m sure he can find something for you to help out with.

There will be no equipment pick-up or drop-off this weekend.  Everything will be waiting for you at the game sites.

It’s very important for all games to start on time this weekend, so please don’t dilly-dally, and know in advance where you are supposed to be.  There will be a copy of the bracket on each clipboard, as well as the referee assignments.

Please pick up after yourselves out there.  These aren’t fields we use very often, and we will need access to them in the future, so please leave the fields cleaner than you found them.

Everyone have a good time out there and enjoy the most exciting part of our season!

Thanks,
Geoff
