    My fellow kickballers,

I’d like to welcome everyone to what is sure to be another glorious year of all that is Lawrence kickball. Like many of you, I have watched the level of passion, commitment, skill, and organization within our little league continue to grow year after year. Ever since the first kickball game in which I participated, I have always been impressed with the purpose and spirit of those who have played. I believe that the Kaw Valley Kickball League is a great example of what it so great about living in Lawrence.

As Josh Hunt mentioned in his previous letter, I am succeeding him in the position of commissioner of the KVKL this season. While this post is largely ceremonial, it does place me in a position to be not only the voice of the league, but also the ears. Although each member of the council has an equal say in league matters, I realize that many of you will come to me with your thoughts, questions, and concerns about the league, and I welcome your input. I am aware that one of the strengths of the league—its diversity—also tends to create a wide variety of opinions amongst its members, and I hope to get input from each of these camps throughout the year.

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome three new members to the KVKL council: Blake Swenson, Adina Scanland, and Curtis McCoy. These folks will be filling the shoes of Jessica Miescher and Robert Coffman, who served the league admirably the past season. The third spot had been vacated before the start of last season. I look forward to working with each of these folks, and am confident that they will serve the league quite well.

Perhaps most importantly, I need to pass on some information about team registration. There have been some changes in the registration deadlines to allow some extra time to compile rosters and collect league fees. The registration deadlines are as follows:

Returning Teams: Rosters due April 1st, fees due April 15th.
New Teams: Rosters due April 15th, accepted teams fees due May 1st.

For more information about team registration, please contact Nick Lerner at NL@NicholasLerner.com or visit www.kawvalleykickball.com for more details.

    Sincerely,

    Phil Mitchell

  • Farewell Address from Commissioner Josh Hunt

    Hello Kickball Comrades,

Although it may not feel like it today, kickball weather is just around the corner and we in the kickball council are wasting no time getting the year off to an early start. There are many new and exciting things happening not the least of which is a new commissioner! Last year when Kelly handed us the reigns we unanimously voted in place a system that doesn’t allow a commissioner to hold the head league position for consecutive seasons, this way the league can experience a wide variety of management styles and hopefully will maintain a very democratic form in the years to come.

The way it works is the existing council members at the end of a season vote in a new head commissioner and the previous commissioner can either remain on the council or step down and nominate someone new who will then be voted on by the council. Well, we voted and the 2008 commissioner will be Phil Mitchell.

Phil has been a very strong part of the kickball team for a few years now and everyone is very confident that he will do an amazing job. He created the kickball cards a couple of years ago, he has been an outstanding referee, he has dedicated many ideas and a lot of time to the website, blog/forum, field set-up and many other areas that have shown great progress in the league. I have chosen to stay on the council in hopes that I can continue to do my part for the league. However, there are some people who have stepped down in the council therefore there are some new council members that Phil will be releasing in his initial league address.

Thank you for a great 2007 and looking forward to an even better 2008. Please feel free to reach out with questions, and make sure to check out the details of this year’s registration, which is already taking place.

    Josh

It’s that time of year again. The time of year when the men and women of Downtown Lawrence (and elsewhere) begin to focus on one thing. Love? Possibly. Lust? Maybe. No, it’s kickball time again and the warm weather already has people talking. Shall we begin?

Last year’s captains are encouraged to submit rosters by April 1. It will once again be necessary to charge a fee of $100 per team*, and returning teams should submit this money before April 15th. Returning teams that submit a minimum 10 person roster (7 men, 3 women) and their entry fee on time will have thus reserved their spot in the league this year. Otherwise, there’s no guarantee…

Rumour has it that many teams may be splintering into two or more squads. Because of this, and the limitted number of teams that can participate, the league will consider the “returning” team to be that of last year’s head captain. (ex: say the Replay wishes to split into two squads, the Replay and the Jackpot. The “returning” team would be whichever of the two that last year’s Replay captain will be on. The other squad would be considered a “new” team.) Teams from last year who simply wish to change names or captains will be fine as long as two teams don’t consider themselves the same “returning” team. Confused? Shoot me an email.

New teams must submit a roster by April 15 to be considered for the league. Those teams added to the league will then have until May 1 to pay their entry fees.

To submit a roster, download a form (click here if you have excel, here if you don’t) and complete it. Electronic rosters can be sent to kawvalleykickball@gmail.com. Paper copies can be turned into Nichols Lerner, who can be reached at 785.766.5613.

All fees should be paid to Nick, and arrangements for payment should be made as soon as possible.

Again, if you desire to be part of the most exciting, most talented, and flat-out best kickball league in town, do not delay. Here’s a recap for you memory-challenged folk:

    Returning Teams:

Roster (electronic or paper) due April 1

    Fee due April 15

    New Teams:

    Roster due April 15

    Fee due May 1
