Heat Advisory for Sunday
Posted on July 19th, 2008 No commentsGreetings Fellow Kickballers,
After checking out the forecast I wanted to give everyone a heads up on what to expect for tomorrow. At the time the first pitches will be rolled the heat index is expected to be 104F and will dip down ever-so-slightly to 100F for the 7pm games. While most of you are adults and can allegedly take care of yourselves, I wanted to make sure everyone was aware of some “best practices” when it comes to beating such heat.
1) Drink water. Starting right now. Don’t over-do it tonight with the booze. Your level of hydration will have much to do with whether or not you wilt in the sun tomorrow. I would also recommend not drinking alcohol during your game, it will only make matters worse.
2) Sit some out. If your team is big enough to have substitutions, make sure everyone’s getting a break now and then.
3) Find shade and water immediately if you begin to experience the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, headache, muscle cramps, and dizziness. These are symptoms of heat exhaustion, and indicate that your body temperature is reaching dangerous levels. If you experience an absence of sweating, rapid pulse, difficultly breathing, or disorientation you may be experiencing a more serious and potentially fatal condition called heat stroke. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should immediately be taken to the emergency room for treatment. The leading cause of heat exhaustion and heat stroke are dehydration (see #1).
Also be sure to drink water before and during the partaking of any alcoholic beverages following kickball activities. On that note, may I once again invite everyone to the official kickball after-party at the Replay, beginning at 9pm. Dollar cover gets you kickball drink specials and access to some slammin’ tunes laid down by some fine ladies from the Love Garden. All money raised goes directly back into the league fund, so come out, have fun, boogie down, and support the KVKL.
Good Luck,
Philp.s. – please refer to the following webpage for more information about heat stroke: http://www.medicinenet.com/heat_stroke/article.htm

Post-Game of the Week
Posted on July 18th, 2008 No commentsSadly, we will not have a late game under the lights this week. Do not fret, however. I invite everyone to take this lemon and make lemonade (hard lemonade if you prefer*) by heading to the Replay after the 7pm games wrap-up. For only a $1 cover charge you’ll have a chance to swap stories, celebrate your prowess or drown your sorrows, and boogie on down. A couple of lovely ladies from the Love Garden will be providing the tunes and the Replay will be providing a ridiculous drink special just for you.
* I am not 100% certain that the Replay offers hard lemonade.
