  • KVKL Top 20 Rankings: Week 5

Posted on June 29th, 2009 CandlePants 8 comments

Well we made it to the midway point and everyone’s beginning to see where they size up. What an amazing game of the week on sunday! I think we’ll start to see some really close games in the second half of the season as we enter rank play…including rematches of tellers vs rangelife and eastsiders vs sacred sword. It’s getting harder to rank teams as everyone continues to beat each other, but what the hell I’ll do it anyway! Livin on the fringe…candlepanties.

    News and notes:

Ref schedule:  @ FGs Cowser- 5:30 refs 4, 4 refs 5:30. 9 refs 7, and 7 refs 9.  @ FGs Wrigley- 7 refs the 4, 4 refs 5:30, and 5:30 refs 7.  Standard ref schedule applies at WTP, Edgewood, Woodlawn, and Hillcrest.

If you have any questions regarding the above ref schedule, please contact me.

The garage will open early today to accommodate the early games (4 p.m.).  I’m interested to see how things go at Cowser. We intend on using that field much more during the second half of the season (sans the mound).

Can recycling- Cans for the Community will use Douglas County Fairgrounds as the collection hub today.  When you bring the equipment back to the garage, please drop the green recycling bag and take the plastic bag (with cans) to the Fairgrounds.

All Star Game Weekend- Please pick one guy and one gal from your team to represent your squad at next week’s game:  8 p.m. @ Hobbs.  Also, we intend to use Hobbs for pickup games beginning around 5 p.m.  It’ll be an interesting weekend for attendance because of the holiday.  Please come join the fun if you are able!

Refs- A brief reminder, our responsibility (as refs) is to be attentive and be ready to make a call. Mistakes will happen!  Move on.  We had some issues at several sites last week.

If all goes well, the second half schedule will be posted before next weekend.  That should be very interesting.

Finally, a BIG THANKS to Clayton Snodgrass for his tireless work on the website!  You sir, are the stuff….

Thankfully, it’ll be much cooler today (still important to hydrate).  Enjoy your kickball Sunday!

From June 22 Lawrence Journal World (http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2009/jun/22/road-sewer-work-planned-near-hobbs-park/):

“Work starts Tuesday to repave a one-block stretch of 10th Street, a project that will include installation of a new sewer line for public restrooms at nearby Hobbs Park.  Contract crews are scheduled to remove existing pavement and place a new surface along 10th, from Pennsylvania to Delaware streets. Parking will be prohibited on that section of 10th, as construction continues.  The park is southeast of 10th and Delaware streets.  The entire project is expected to be finished by July 17.”

Newest podcast (Thanks Gavon, Phil, Coug and Jacki!) @ http://www.lawrence.com/podcasts/podpeople/2009/jun/17/ballin-idols-week-4/

Reminder: Here’s a list of the early games @ 4:00 p.m NEXT WEEK (June 28th).  Please make sure your team is aware of these times. However, some of these times may be altered if the status at DCF Fenway changes (see below). You’ll know more as information becomes available to KVKL.  Please contact me with any concerns.

    Das Boot
    @ Blue Collar Press

    Fairgrounds Fenway   4:00pm*

    Eastsiders

    Fairgrounds Wrigley   4:00pm

    Liberty Hall

    Water Tower Park   4:00pm

    Open Sky Landscaping
    @ First Blood

    Woodlawn Elementary   4:00pm

    Channel 6
    @ Jazzhaus

*All Fenway games may have to be relocated (because of city-wide tournaments).  Hopefully we will know by this weekend if that is the case.

Aluminum recycling went pretty well last week, it was our biggest catch yet.  There are still many cans escaping to the trash containers.  We are making progress.  As you are leaving your respective game sites, please sweep the area for errant trash (even if it wasn’t yours).  The more people cleaning up = the less time it will take.  In some cases, I think we have been leaving sites nicer than we found them.  Nice.  Again, please stay on top of this.

KVKL gear:  Pint glasses $5, 3/4 sleeve Tshirts (just in time for summer) $10, a very limited number of Ladies (I mean short) Shorts  $10, Kballs, and stickers 3 for $1. We’ll have these for sale at GOTW.  Cottin’s has some shirts and I’ll be depositing more of the above there on Monday.

It is going to be hot and humid this weekend, please hydrate to the best of your ability.  We really want to avoid heat related injury and illness.

    Enjoy your kickball weekend!

    News and notes:

Heard Coug’s podcast(s) yet?  See the links on the Twitter widget  (KVKL blog site).  Fantastic job Cougs!  Also, check out some press on the Channel 6 Toepokes.  Nice.

It may rain today, so please keep an eye on the weather and your phone close.  FYI- If we call the games because of weather, I’ll contact your pool reps and they will contact you as swiftly as possible.  I’ll also send something out on Twitter.

REMEMBER, look for the KVKL green recycling containers (cans only) at all fields and the CFC containers at Hobbs (cans only)

Please be sure to fill out the scorecards thoroughly and legibly.  There is helpful information on the scorecard like the “Line Up Rule” (C.3.), a place to note who the referees were, and space to comment about refs.

We will have KVKL gear for sale at the GOTW: stickers, pint glasses, and balls.  KVKL tshirts may be purchased at Cottin’s Hardware & Rental (http://www.cottinshardware.com/).  Thanks Linda and Tom!

I was heartened by the discussion on rules this week.  What would you think about having a captain’s only meeting around the all-star break?  I say “captain’s” yet simply mean one representative per team.  This may be a good venue to discuss any of your seasonal concerns.  I’d like to hear your thoughts on this matter.

    Enjoy your kickball Sunday!  Deron

  • Lineups, Rules, and more.

    Posted on June 10th, 2009 D-BELT 9 comments

    Hey all,

There have been a few infractions on lineups in Week #1 and Week #2.  Several on the Board looked over the scorecards and noticed these teams using improper lineups:  AstroKitty, Weavers, Teller’s, and Yellow Sub.  Some made errors in week #1, some in week #2, some in both.  Also, Slowride has used the Emergency Play Act (see Rules C.1.a.) once.  I know Teller’s already rectified their lineup in time for week #2.  If your team is on the above list by mistake, my apologies.  It would help if scorekeepers noted which spots on the lineup were females.  I’m disclosing the team names because you will soon be able to view ALL scorecards on the website (as PDFs).  Here is the rule that is the source of some confusion:

C.3. Kicking orders shall contain between 10 to 12 spots. Kicking orders with less than twelve spots must designate at least three spots exclusively for men and for women; orders with twelve spots must designate at least four spots. To accommodate for teams with more than twelve players, two players may share one spot in the order as long as both players kick at least once in the game.

If anyone has any questions about this rule (or others) please contact a Board member at your convenience.

Other rule issues (spotted on the KVKL community forum):

    1.  If a ball goes over the fence without contacting the ground, at any field with an outfield fence and in fair territory, that ball is a HOMERUN.  A nice play by Garrin for sure (kudos!).  His play then seems to nullify the validity of the ground rule double (J.3.). So, a player who bounces a kick over the fence essentially receives a two base penalty.  Why should that player then stop at 2nd base?  Nope, patently absurd.  To clarify, over the fence=HOMERUN.  If someone has an issue with the wording, I’m open to your suggestion.  Again, good on ya’ Garrin!

    2.  Yelling anything at a defender when they are trying to make a play on a ball constitutes, in my view, unsportsmanlike behavior.  I have no problem with officials calling that an out.  Problems: is it the kicker that yells, a runner that yells, or a bench player/supporter that yells?  Who then is out?  Obviously a caught ball regardless of who yells is an out.  However, officials are left to decide (Rule J.2.).  You may stop play, consider the circumstances and use your best judgement.

    3.  Landscape interference (See rule 3.C.i. and ii.) may need to be clarified.  If I’m a defender, I’d pursue ANY ball (particularly a ball I had a chance to catch, even if it ricocheted off a tree or fence) with hopes I’d be rewarded an “out” call on a catch.

    4.  As written, NO warning needs to be issued for a ref to call “encroachment.”  It would be helpful if any  infielder/catcher/pitcher understood this rule (E.4.).

    5.  Injured runner (see Rule C.6).  Captain’s need to be in on ANY changes to the lineup during the game.  If a replacement runner is used, it seemingly shouldn’t be a person who is already kicking in the lineup (unless they are splitting a spot).  I think the captains need to hammer this one out quickly and not hold up the game.  If a new player is used, he/she MUST field at least one inning.  Again, try and use your best judgment.  The rule mostly applies to that injured player’s ability to kick again.  We’ll work on this one as well.

    6.  I believe the double kick rule is clear (Rule I.2.a.).  If the ball never touches the ground and is caught, double kick or not, it’s a foul ball out.  I am in full agreement with Adam, Geoff, and Adrian on this one.

Lastly, please look for the KVKL green recycling containers at your game site.  We are losing many aluminum cans to trash bins.  I know this will take time and I appreciate your patience.  Thanks all!

Hey all nice work out there in week 2! Didn’t see too many injuries this week so that’s good. Here’s my rankings for the week.  All the undefeated teams are placed first(8 teams are 2-0) and after that it’s a wild wild west of placement based on previous years performance, strength of schedule, margin of victory, whether or not i got a bribe, and which teams made the least fun of my sleeveless acid wash jean jacket with fringes. If you got beef blog it out. See you in the weight room. Candlepants aka Pooh.

1  Pita Pit (last years champs)

2 First Blood (still destroying everyone)

3 Sacred Sword (i hear they’re not bunting this year)

4 Eastsiders (all their kicks bend like Beckham. how do they do that?)

5 Love Garden (always in the hunt)

6 Jazzhaus (don’t sleep on em’)

7 Liberty Hall(first time ever in top 10! congrats late fees!)

8 Replay Lounge(2-0? Are they playing sober this year?)

9 Tellers(watch out teams their ‘D’ is getting better)

10 Yellow Sub(i’m craving the tempeh parmesan)

11 Red Lyon(they party but always end up in top 12…what’s their secret?)

12 Das Boot (this team will be real good by end of season…you’ve been warned)

13 Screamers(nice clinic at game of the week)

14 Mad Greek(feta cheese is my favorite behind drunken goat cheese?)

    15 Rangelife(2 skinny + 2 hip = 4 sure losers!)

16 Eldridge (they rotate players better than any other team)

17 Slow Ride (the Harley parade was nice last Saturday)

18 Brew Ballers(getting better each week)

19 Astrokitty (their alter egos are the SpacePussies look out!)
