The Kaw Valley Kickball League was founded on the ideals of community, festivity, and love for a game most of us played in elementary school. While we take all of these values seriously, we as a league are ever evolving. The KVKL has been moving towards only using dirt fields for a number of years. Our competition level and challenges with officiating have led us to desire more standardized fields, choosing the good ole diamond for the sake of consistency.

A majority of the league indicated on their registration rosters that they do not feel strongly about continued use of grass fields. While we wanted to keep a grass field for those who feel nostalgic, lack of significant interest in grass and desire for more consistent fields have led us to eliminate South Park as a regularly scheduled KVKL game field. We no longer use grass during the tournament, so we feel we should strive for that same consistency during the season.

On the upside, changing our field preferences allows for more games at places like Holcom. This presents a greater opportunity for more exposure (5 fields/10 games/20 teams!) to a majority of the league at a central location.

You are all welcome to use South Park for non-official KVKL events, i.e. practices and scrimmages.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and let’s have a great season!

Brendan Costello AKA Styles has agreed to be the KVKL Documentary Czar and has set a meeting in hopes of getting all interested parties together in one room to develop plans. Please see his note below……

It’s time for another amazing season of Kaw Valley Kickball and I hope everyone is as excited as I am about it. There’s no shortage of fascinating stories, heated debates, and tremendous athleticism in this league, which is why we should, nay, must document this season for future generations to watch and so that when your children’s children are playing kickball in the school yard you can share with them a little piece of history and say,”I played that game as an adult.”
Kickball in Lawrence holds a special place in everyone’s hearts and minds. Whether you’re playing, coaching, drinking, cheering, heckling, drinking, calling the cops on players for public urination, or drinking, the game offers a little bit of escapism from the harsh realities of life in Lawrence, KS. Like all great sports documentaries, the real story revolves around people, not the game. Which is why this documentary will be about you and filmed by you. I’ll need your help in the coming months to film every facet of the league, from the games and practices to the league meetings and after parties. With your help, we can compile a breadth of footage and interviews to make this documentary something special, not just for our little college town, but for all college towns around America (the exceptions being Manhattan, Colombia, and Lexington). With any luck, this will be the Hoop Dreams of kickball. For your reference, here are some awards Hoop Dreams has won:
 Sundance Film Festival: Audience Award for Best Documentary
 Los Angeles Film Critics Association: Best Documentary
 Chicago Film Critics Award: Best Picture
 Producers Guild of America: Special Merit
 Academy Award Nomination: Best Editing
 George Foster Peabody Award
 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award
 National Society of Film Critics: Best Documentary
 New York Film Critics Circle: Best Documentary

If you have a camera and would like to be a part of this prestigious endeavor, please attend our upcoming production meeting on Thursday, May 3 at 5pm in the Big 6 Room at The Eldridge. We will need information about what team you play for and what games you will be able to attend in addition to technical specifics for your camera and what format it shoots in.

I’d love for you to be involved and hope you can make the meeting. If you are unable to attend and would still like to help film this season, please don’t hesitate to call or email me to discuss your involvement. With your help we can make this documentary amazing. Let’s take this bitch off the chain.

We wish to offer our sincerest condolences to the family of Aimee Zielger, who died on April 2nd in an early morning car/train collision. Her tragic loss has been felt throughout the community as she was a counselor at Free State High School, a co-founder of the Bert Nash and USD 497 collaboration WRAP Program, and was active in multiple youth sports programs. For those who are unaware, Aimee was also a long-time member and key contributor to the Eastiders city league and KVKL kickball teams. Her absence will be noticed and she will be sorely missed.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Aimee Ziegler Children’s Education Fund, Aimee Ziegler Scholarship Fund through Free State High School, or Headquarters Counseling Center, and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

Hello Fellow Kickball Enthusiasts,

I am looking forward to another fun-filled summer of kickball. I am happy to serve as your commissioner for the 2012 season. The KVKL Board has been working hard already trying to make sure we maximize the enjoyment for all involved in the league.

On that note, I would like everyone to know that this year we will have a set player code of conduct with specific consequences for specific actions. I hope this code will assist referees when dealing with issues during the game, and I also hope that the existence of this code reminds us that kickball is fun and is not an occasion to lose one’s temper or act inappropriately. We will release the code of conduct once it is finalized.

I would also like to mention that due to our desire to maintain a good relationship with the city, we will abstain from using Edgewood and Water Tower Park as playing sites. While we considered omitting all grass fields, many still enjoy the grass roots of the league, so we will keep South Park as our only grass field. Because of this change, your team will have the option to list your grass vs. dirt preference on your team’s roster. While we will try to accommodate preferences, we cannot guarantee that everyone who wants to play on grass will be able to do so. We are also raising league fees from $150 to $175 this year to help cover the additional fielding costs.

On a final note, we will continue to have divisions for league play taking up 7 weeks, with rank play using 3 weeks. As a board we are still working on a system for clear tournament ranking, but we hope to have that to you before the season starts.

*Final Dates

-April 1st Returning Teams registration, waivers-as many as possible (both captains sign captain’s waivers), roster & money due

-April 15th New Team registration, waivers-as many as possible (both captains sign captain’s waivers) & money due

-May 1st All Captains Meeting 6pm Big 6 Room @ the Eldridge Hotel (release schedule at this time)

-May 6th Ref Clinic, time & location TBD

-May 20th Start of Season

-May 27th No games due to Holiday Weekend

-July 1st We will play this week since the 4th holiday is on a Wednesday

In starting the season on May 20th, we have the 1st weekend in August for possible Rivalry Week/Rain-out week, still leaving 3 weekends in August for tournament.

Let’s have a great year!

Diana
