  • Nick Lerner – 2010 KVKL Commissioner

Posted on December 27th, 2009 D-BELT No comments

    To whom it may concern,

We at the Kaw Valley Kickball League have been intent on not letting the same person serve as Commissioner for consecutive years.  Accordingly, Nick Lerner has accepted this role for the coming season. Nick has the requisite experience and energy to keep moving this organization forward.  With Nick at the helm, the KVKL is well positioned for another great year.  Good luck Nick!  I hope you all are enjoying the off-season.  Kickball in 2010 is soon approaching with registration only a few weeks away.  See you very soon.

    Sincerely,

    Deron Belt

Here is a brief summary on our checking account for the 2009 operating year.

    Our beginning balance: $552.82

    2/18 Deposit (from Love Garden/merch) + 70 = 622.82

    2/27 USPS (PO Box rental/12 months) – 42 = 580.82

    3/13 Deposit (from Cottin’s/merch) + 110 = 690.82

    3/23 Athletic Stuff (kballs) – 339.72 = 351.10

    4/7 Deposit (Team donations/kball sales) + 3831 = 4182.10

    4/21 Deposit (Team donations/kball sales) + 770 = 4952.10

    5/10 Cottin’s (equipment for field lining/paint) – 91.55 = 4860.55

    5/14 Deposit (kball sales) + 215 =  5075.55

    5/14 Westlake Hardware (recycling conts.) – 150.91 = 4924.64

    6/9 FedEx Kinkos (copies) – 8.26 = 4916.38

    6/15 Sun Creations (merch) – 262.50 = 4653.88

    6/19 Deposit (merch/kball  sales) + 291 = 4944.88

    6/29 City of Lawrence (Field Rental, pre-season thru week 5) – 1575 = 3369.88

    7/2 FedEx Kinkos (scanned document) – 1.62 = 3368.26

    7/7 FedEx Kinkos (copies) – 14.57 = 3353.69

    7/10 Deposit (from 1st fund raiser @ Replay/merch and kball sales) + 460 = 3813.69

    7/12 Clayton Snodgrass (software for the website) – 100 = 3713.69

    8/10 Sun Creations (merch) – 125 = 3588.69

    8/15 Athletic Stuff (kballs) – 146.65 = 3442.04

    8/16 FedEx Kinkos (copies) – 7.28 = 3434.76

    9/15 Liberty Hall (rental and kegs)* – 645 = 2789.76

    9/15 City of Lawrence (Field Rental, week 6 thru playoffs) – 2075 = 714.76

    9/28 Girls with LSE (donation for Andrew) – 600 = 114.76

    10/08 Deposit (from 2nd fund  raiser @ Replay/merch sales) + 931.50 = 1046.26

    10/13 Sun Creations (Fall Classic t’s) – 594 = 452.26

    10/13 City of Lawrence (Field Rental, fall clasic) – 150 = 302.26

    10/30 Deposit (from Fall classic)* + 1112 = 1414.26

    10/30 Douglas County Dental Clinic (donation) – 1200 = $214.26

    Ending Balance: $214.26

An additional $125 is owed to the KVKL by various league folk for merch.  I fully expect to collect that money before next season.  Also, the KVKL still has approximately $500 in merch (kballs, fall classic t’s, and pint glasses) for carry over to next season.  Please note the Fall Classic t’s will certainly devalue as it will likely become harder to sell them for $10.  As next year rolls around, that merch number will probably be closer to $300.

Next foreseeable expense?  USPS PO Box rental in February 2010, (roughly) $42.

*There were two occasions where the number shown above DID NOT REPRESENT the total expense of the event.  Actual costs for the year-end party (Liberty Hall rental $300 + 6 Free State Kegs $1110 + supplies and KVKL cake $80 + Jayhawk Trophy engraving $11.32) were $1501.32.  Liberty Hall took in $765 at the door (300+1110=1410-765=$645, the number shown above).  Actual costs for the 2009 Fall Classic (Sun Creations $594 + City of Lawrence rental $150 + supplies $57) were $801.

    Pain in cash.

    Some interesting numbers:

    We received $7790.50 in 2009 compared with $3562 in 2008 and $3557 in 2007.

Merch/kball sales and fund raising constituted 27% ($2090.50) of the money the KVKL received in 2009.  The remaining 73% ($5700) came from team dues/donations.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the information presented here, please contact me at your leisure.  Thank you!

    7:30  Winner Pod 3 v Winner Pod 4                   7:30 Winner Pod 1 v Winner Pod 2

Notes- This event is RAIN OR SHINE.  We do not have a rain date.  Twelve teams signed up before the deadline.  All games will be played at Lyons.  The first games BEGIN (please start on time) at 12:30 p.m. and the last games begin at 7:30 p.m.  Home team is the team listed on the bottom of each game.  It’s possible that some teams will be short on players at a particular game time. So, people may be provided an opportunity to play in extra games.  More kickball=more awesome. Am I right?  KVKL will provide kballs, scoreboards, scoresheets, and clipboards/pens.  All proceeds will go to the Douglas County Dental Clinic.

Food- A grill will be provided for anyone who wants to bring your own food to cook.  Some snacks will be available (similar to last year).

Sunday’s forecast- 44-47 degrees with a slight chance of rain.

Possible, then absurd scenarios- In the event that a tie occurs between teams in a pod (for example, two or three teams are tied @ 1-1), the team that has allowed the fewest runs will advance to the final game.  In the event that teams are tied for fewest runs allowed, we’ll go with the time tested method of rock-paper-scissors (best of three if you’d like).  Home teams for the 7:30 games will be decided by a coin flip.

As we are going WITHOUT refs, please keep sportsmanship at the forefront of your competitive consciousness.  We are playing for a cause: fundraising and fun.  Recycling bins will be on-site (aluminum, glass, and plastic).

There will be a limited number shirts for sale ($10).  Please email with any questions you may have.  Otherwise, see you Sunday.

    Thanks all!   Deron Belt      gradually@hotmail.com

  • 2009 KVKL FALL CLASSIC: Sunday, October 11th

    Posted on September 19th, 2009 D-BELT 3 comments

    Hey Kaw Valley Kickball participants,

Now that the official season has finished, we figured you all missed kickball and we wanted to entice you with our 3rd annual charity kickball tourney: The KVKL 2009 FALL CLASSIC!

    When/Where: Sunday, October 11 @ Lyons Fields, Noon – 10pm

This year proceeds will go to the Douglas County Dental Clinic.

Cost: $100 per team (The $100 includes 10 COMMEMORATIVE T-SHIRTS for each team that signs up and pays)

    The rules:

    1) We will follow KVKL rules.  The ONLY changes in the rules will be that there is NO GENDER RULE.  Teams may again be all males, all females, or they may include both genders.

    2) Teams playing against each other may decide on the legitimacy of BUNTS.  If you want no bunts and both teams agree, you may ban the bunt.  Both teams must agree to allow or disallow bunting.

    3) Games will be seven innings or ONE HOUR.  This will help us with time and allow us to play up to 14 games all day.

    4)  There will be NO TIES.

    5)  ALL GAMES WILL BE SELF-OFFICIATED.

We are hoping 12 teams will like to be involved this year.  The minimum we need to host the tourney is eight teams.  With this style of play it means every team will play at LEAST two games, teams in the finals will play up to THREE GAMES.

The deadline for team sign-up AND to pay the $100 is FRIDAY OCT. 2 at NOON.  At this time you may also send your SIZE requests for the 10 shirts.  If teams don’t pay by this time, we will gladly order you XXXL shirts.  We therefore hope everyone will pay the entry fee early or at the above deadline.

Cash or check may be delivered to Deron Belt (GREAT HARVEST BREAD CO. – 807 Vermont St.) or Jacki Becker (912 Collective House. – 912 Tennessee St.).   Please make checks payable to Kaw Valley Kickball League.

Cans for the community will also be involved with this event.  So, please consider using aluminum as the preferred vehicle for your beverage consumption.

Over the past few years there have been a few all girl teams.  We would love to have as many all female teams as possible this year.  If any women are interested in playing on an all girl team, please reach out to Jacki Becker and/or Brianne Koester. They are coordinating the female teams.  If you are a guy looking for a team, please contact Deron Belt.

Any question, comments, or ideas?  Feel free to reach out to any of the following people:

    Deron Belt (KVKL Commissioner/Pita Pit) – gradually@hotmail.com

Jacki Becker (Sacred Sword) – jackioh@uptoeleven.com

Andrea Vieux (West Coast) – no1jhawk@yahoo.com

Brianne Koester (Douglas County Dental Clinic/Pita Pit) – briannelk@gmail.com

Let’s hope we can get enough teams together for some fun and raise some money for a fellow Lawrence non-profit agency.

Thank you SO much for organizing the aluminum can recycling at the kickball games.  It was very well run and you made our job simple. We have been invited to participate in many events but most of the work falls on our shoulders.

Recycling isn’t easy because it involves dedication & hard work!  Cans for the Community members were impressed with players and spectators alike making the effort to get every can in the recycling bins as well as cleaning up the stadium in record time. What a great group!

The extra pounds collected at the games helped us raise $1,000. for Centro Hispano. Every can really does count!

    You guys ROCK!!!

  • Championship Week: August 30th, 2009

Posted on August 28th, 2009 D-BELT No comments

It’s the last week of league play, I hope everyone has a good time.  Good luck to all teams!

Equipment: Milton’s, West Coast, First Blood, and Pita Pit are responsible for picking up equipment (Adina will be at the garage around 4 p.m.).  The winners of the Lyons East, West and Cowser games will bring ALL equipment to Hobbs (west parking lot) when finished with their games.  Cans for Community will have their bins at Hobbs, so please funnel all aluminum cans to those receptacles.  Thanks and great job with the can recycling this year!

Here is the ref schedule for this Sunday (8/30):

5 p.m. Lyons East Love Garden @ First Blood     refs- Curtis McCoy, Josh Hunt, Shaher Ibrahimi, Mike Tiffany

5 p.m. Lyons West Eastsiders @ Pita Pit     refs- Brad Keirns, Shawn Miller, Geoff Wright, Nick Lerner

5 p.m. Cowser Replay @ West Coast Saloon     refs- Phil Chiles, Leslie Smith, Mike Pergande, Paul Santos

5 p.m. Hobbs Weaver’s @ Milton’s     refs- Aaron Swaggerty, Jason Holladay, Adam Patterson, Casey McAtee

Please start all games on time.  We’ll figure out the refs for the 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. games on site.  I encourage captains of the 7 p.m. game to choose refs from those available as it may take awhile for people to trickle over from Lyons/Cowser.  Predicted high temperature for Sunday: 74-78 degrees.  Nice.  Thanks for all your hard work this season.  The KVKL exists and flourishes because of willing participants like you.  We greatly appreciate the time you donate to the league.
May this season come to a close in a sportsmanlike manner,
    Deron
  • Playoffs, Week #2: August 23rd, 2009

Posted on August 21st, 2009 D-BELT No comments

    News and notes:

-REMINDER- If you haven’t already, please check the revised 2009 playoff bracket for your field locations and game times.  In addition, a revised ref  schedule should be out in the next 24 hours.  Please keep an eye out for that.  Again, the 5:00 and 6:30 games will have the standard ref schedule.  Some  8:00 and 9:30 games will have travel times.  Therefore, starting ALL games on time is very important.  PLEASE GET TO YOUR ASSIGNED REF/GAME  SITES AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.  For equipment pickup/drop off: the team with the better seed in all games is the home team.  Last team that wins  at  a field drops off.  If you play in a 6:30 p.m. game and win (specifically at Cowser, Hobbs, Edgewood, or Water Tower Park) please drop off equipment at  Lerner garage as promptly as possible.  Someone will be waiting.

-My skills of prognostication are absolute crap.  Still waiting on the bathrooms at Hobbs.  From this point forward, I am going to abide by a city + 10  rule.  Or, whatever timeline the COL tells me then add 10 weeks.

-Regarding the  Screamers, Captain Swaggarty has graciously offered to rescind the results (via email) of their two games because of inadvertently  using an  ineligible player.  Therefore, the bracket now reflects a ToePokes (W) and Screamers (L) as well as a Replay (W) and Screamers (L).  Matt  Whitesell assures me  that Replay will be fielding a team and fulfilling their ref responsibilities.  If the Replay choses not to play, they will be responsible    for ref duties this Sunday.

-Looks like the weather will be in the high 70’s or low 80’s when we start playing on Sunday.  Wow.

-Cans for Community will be collecting cans at Lyons this week, so please plan on hauling your cans to that locale.

-Everybody did a fantastic job getting to and from game sites last weekend.  Looks like the only games that went late were those in extra innings.  The day   went very smoothly and we have you to thank for that.  Keep it up, only two weeks remain.  I appreciate the passion and commitment you’ve shown the       league as it wouldn’t work without you.

    See you this weekend!

    Deron
