2019 was a big year for the KVKL: we had our first skills competition at the Spring Charity Tourney; installed the Memorial Bench next to the scoreboard at Hobbs; re-branded the mid-summer skills clinic: Kickball is for Us; we continued to donate to Cans for the Community for the 10th year; we congratulated 2019 Champions Muddy Waters; and we raised a lot of money for the Safe Bar Alliance, our 2019 chosen charity!
Another year is almost completed for the KVKL and we can’t wait to see what happens in 2020.
In the off season you can expect the board to be ironing out some wrinkles in the rule book, deciding on games for the pub crawl, and taking side bets for who will have the fastest time around the bases at the combine next spring. There are some possibilities for two additional spring events, and we will be looking for you to volunteer. If you have ideas for the 2020 charity be sure to tell the board! It would be helpful to know how much you will be able to help if we choose your charity, so let us know where the money would go, and why are you passionate about it. We don’t come up with these ideas out of thin air, so please share your charity ideas.
At the beginning of the season we agreed to add Kal McClure to the board as my replacement for 2020. Kal has been sitting in on meetings, learning and helping with some behind the scene work all year. She started playing with Muddy Waters four years ago and has been co-captain for the last two years! She has a great attitude, gets shit done and I look forward to seeing what she will to bring to the league. WELCOME KAL!
Jana and Staci will for the first time in KVKL history, take on the role of Co-Commissioner. Both Jana and Staci have been playing since 2011 and have been captains for their respective teams (Corksuckers / Ladybird). They also joined the board at the same time so having them take on the commissioner roll together just made sense. The board will still have 7 members with Katie, David, Ethan and Ben all returning, and you can reach out to them at any time.
In LFK on Sundays in the park, we all have the same goal…let’s have a good time. I didn’t know it at the time, but I found my home when I joined the Kaw Valley Kickball League. We have athletes & couch potatoes, introverts & extroverts — all finding a home in this bizarre but loving group. I’ve formed friendships with people that never would have been in my world otherwise, and now I cannot see my world without them. I never imagined I’d stay as long as I have, especially since I didn’t know what I was agreeing to when I joined the board in the first place. I learned a lot being on the KVKL Board, most importantly it taught me to reach out to people when I need them and appreciate everyone for what they bring to the table. After 10 years as a board member I have learned from the best and I hope I am able to pass on some of the skills and history I’ve collected from current and past members, now that I have retired from the board.
Thank you for letting me be a leader for the last decade KVKL. I’ll see you on the fields next season. Remember, Most Fun Wins since 2002!
How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.
