Rules Update, Ref Quiz, Equipment Reminders

by | May 21, 2017 | From the Board, Rules

Hello Kickballers,

The season is almost here! The board has made a couple tweaks to the rules since the Captain’s Meeting in April. We found some rules were a rather unclear in their intent, so we clarified some language.

Rule G.5.d Said:
d. The first-base plane: To avoid collisions at first-base, defenders shall step only on the white side of the base; the runner shall run on the foul side of the first-base line and step on the orange side of first base. If contact is made between the runner and defender in foul territory, including the vertical plane of the foul line, the runner shall be safe. If contact is made in fair territory, the runner shall be out.

The foul line is still considered fair territory, so we changed “of the foul line” to “where foul territory begins.”

Rule G.5.d now reads:
d. The first-base plane: To avoid collisions at first-base, defenders shall step only on the white side of the base; the runner shall run on the foul side of the first-base line and step on the orange side of first base. If contact is made between the runner and defender in foul territory, including the vertical plane where foul territory begins, the runner shall be safe. If contact is made in fair territory, the runner shall be out.

Rule G.5.b Said:
5. Avoiding contact between runner and fielder should be a priority for all players:

When a defender is making a play on a THROWN ball or not involved with the play they shall avoid the path of the runner and shall not make contact with the runner or that runner will be awarded an extra base (or be called safe it they do not make it safely to the next base).

At the Ref Clinic it was brought to our attention that the placement of the runner if defensive interference gets called was rather ambiguous, so we made it very clear where the runner should end up in this scenario.

Rule G.5.b now reads:
5. Avoiding contact between runner and fielder should be a priority for all players:

When a defender is making a play on a THROWN ball or not involved with the play they shall avoid the path of the runner and shall not make contact with that runner. If contact occurs and the runner does not reach the next base safely (the base immediately after contact occurs), the runner shall be awarded that base. If the runner does reach the next base safely, the runner will be awarded an additional base unless the runner has already safely advanced to said additional base.

The full rules can be found under the Docs & Quick Links page on the kawvalleykickball.com website.

We also have the Ref Quiz up and running. Each team must have their captain and co-captain take and pass the quiz by June 4th (the 2nd week of scheduled games). As many people as possible from each team are encouraged to take the quiz.

I would also like to remind Captains that the home team for the 5pm game each week is required to pick up equipment from our shed at 721 E 9th Street “at the Art Emergency Warehouse” near Hobbs Park
For week 1 those teams are Happy Shirt, Wildman, Kansas Tree Care, Woost, Ghosts, Red Lyon, Johnny’s, and Channel 6. The home team for the 7pm game at Hobbs does not need to pick up equipment. A board member will leave the clipboards and can barrel in one of the dugouts prior to the game. The shed will open sometime between 4pm-4:15pm for pick-up.

The winning teams for the 7pm games are required to return the equipment by 9pm to the Game of the Week location, which will be Hobbs Park (hopefully most weeks if the city can give it to us) (11th & Delaware) by the large tree next to the west dugout. Don’t forget to bring back the can recycling with the can barrel! Look for Diana and Jana for Week 1 drop-off.

Also, remember that each team assigned Game of the Week clean-up is required to supply 4 team members each. For week 1 we have assigned Grandstand, Hurtz D-holes, Where’s My Pitches and Channel 6. Every week, by Friday, Erin will email the teams on clean up and ask if they want clean up or scoreboard duty (or merch duty if it’s a week we need it).
First team(s) to respond with preference gets it. Last team to respond is assigned the leftover task.
The clean up crew has already been set for week 1.

Looking forward to an awesome day of kickball!
