It’s time for the second act of the KVKL season. This in when the games get more serious and teams try to resolve their kicking/defense/drinking issues that were established in the first act. I put the pools that teams played in last year in parenthesis. The runs per game and runs allowed are included for each team, but these numbers will rise or fall significantly during pool play.

The difference between this year and last year is the Goats are out and Wildman is in. Last season, Happy Shirt won the pool despite losing to Das Boot (10-5). Abraxas beat Das Boot and the Goats, but lost to Happy Shirt in pool play and rivalry week by 10 runs both times. Wildman ended up struggling through the 2-seeds, finishing last in the pool. Then they beat Abraxas, Das Boot, and Happy Shirt – in that order – to win the 2012 KVKL Championship. So Wildman will get the chance to beat those three teams – in a row – one more time.

Love Garden and Hurtz are returning 2-seeds. Goats dropped back and Los Matadores moved forward. LG is trying to win the 2-pool for the second year in a row. Hurtz, the perpetual underdog, will get to show how good they really are. The Goats want to show that they are still as good as the team that beat LG last year. Los Mats is the wildcard though, they have the talent to sweep the pool.

Everyone is new to this pool. Corksuckers made the biggest leap and will be the underdog in each of their games until proven otherwise. The other three are evenly matched, and those games will be determined by who has hot feet each week. Red Lyon and RoT split games last year, RoT winning in pool play 11-7 and RL winning 13-6 in the Reasonably Awesome Bracket.

Screamers, the only returning 4-seed, have been alternating wins and losses for most of the season. Afterparty!! plays the role of the underdog well, but in this pool they will have to show they can win the games they are supposed to. Toe Pokes are coming into the pool with a 5-game winning streak, and they just crushed a decent Slowride team. MUrda is coming off consecutive losses against Happy Shirt and Los Mats, so they are trying to get back on track this week.

Dirty Mike is on the rise, Liberty Hall is treading, Slowride is sinking – they have lost 4 straight, and I’m impressed the Rats are even in this pool. That being said, Slowride is the most polished team here, and they should win the division.

Last year, Rockets were 1-2 in the 6 pool, BB and Ghosts were 2-1 in the 7 pool, and Tellerdactyls 0-3 in the 7. The most improved team in this pool is Tellerdactyls. If this division is determined by offense (and the opposing team’s defensive mistakes), Ghosts have the advantage. BB beat Rockets in the less awesome bracket last year 16-12.

A couple of 8-seeds from last year have inched forward. BP Tigers dropped a little and Free State dropped even more. The pool should come down to those two teams, but Jazzhaus and $! May have improved enough to steal a win from them.

The only returning team to the 8-pool is the reigning 8-pool champion, Harper Valley PTA. The pool looks tougher this year with two 5-seeds and a 6-seed from last year. Three of the 8-seeds are still scrapping for at least one win. If Asteroid Head wins there will be two winless teams left after this week.
