2012 KVKL Tournament Week 2 in Review

This past Sunday was the final week of kickball for many teams this season.  Strangely enough there are still technically nine teams playing this week, the final week of the 2012 season.  The second weekend of the tournament always seems to be filled with a bit more tension and the losses have the ability to be a bit tougher to swallow.  All in all it sounds like nearly everyone had a fun weekend of kickball win, lose, or draw…

The Fully Awesome Bracket

We are down to two teams for the crown.  Pita Pit advanced to the final after pulling out a couple of nail biters this past Sunday.  First they held off the Los Matadores, winning the game in extra innings, and them they had to turn around and win in come from behind fashion against the Chalmersiz.

I didn’t get to see any of the first game against Los Matadores, but it sounded like a tight game the whole way through.  And if an extra inning game wasn’t enough, Pita Pit was down two runs to the Chalmersiz in the bottom of the eighth before scoring three runs of their own to take a one run lead and held off the Chalmersiz for a spot in the final.

Pita enters the final again after falling in the championship in 2010.  They seem hungry to win their unprecedented third KVKL title.

The other side of the bracket was quite a surprise.  Wildman upset the #2 seeded Barracudas and then also upset the #6 seed Das Boot (who had a hell of a come from behind win to defeat #3 Love Garden), bunting their way into the championship game.

I can’t say much for the Barracuda game.  We played really flat and it didn’t help that we were forced to play with two injured players.  Give them credit though.  They took advantage and played their style of kickball; which isn’t the most pleasant or entertaining style of kickball, but hey, it worked on Sunday.  I guess there can be no complaints from me since the two teams that defeat us this season are playing for the cup.

Wildman will try to knock off the heavily favored Pita Pit this Sunday.  If they win I think they’ll be the lowest seed ever to do so.

The Resonably Awesome Bracket

In the reasonably awesome bracket Red Lyon continued to prove that they are way better than a 15 seed, dismantling their opponents on Sunday.  They will have to await the results of the #9 Hurtz Donut vs. #5 Goats game to see who they play for the first ever Reasonably Awesome crown.  The game should be a good one to watch as a warm-up for the championship game (although it’s the 5:00 PM game).

The Less Awesome Bracket

Four teams remain in the Less Awesome Bracket: #18 Free State vs. #19 Channel 6 and #20 Gang Green vs. #24 Brewballers.  Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this means the Less Awesome Bracket trophy will be hoisted by a first time winner, so that’s always fun.

There’s only one week of kickball left.  The summer flew by as always.  Good luck to all the teams preparing for the final week of play.  For the rest of us, stock up those coolers and get ready to enjoy one final Sunday of kickball.
